Type: Full Time
Education/Experience: Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, and/or 10 years of construction operations or construction-related experience. Must have direct experience and knowledge of civil construction.
About the Position:
The Superintendent is responsible for all onsite management of construction projects and field personnel from inception to completion of each assigned project.
Responsibilities
Safety:
- Know, follow, and enforce all company and client safety rules and company policies and procedures while working in conjunction with the Safety Department.
- Be a leader and example in implementing the Corporate Safety Policy.
- Plan for safety equipment needed on the job site.
- Conduct and oversee effective daily safety meetings.
- Complete all required safety reports within 24 hours.
Pre-Construction:
- Review, understand, and implement construction project documents such as contracts, submittals, plans, specifications, drawings, job layout, as-builts and quantities.
- Assist in planning for personnel requirements on the job site.
- Assist in planning for equipment and tools needed on the job site and scheduling with the equipment department.
- Assist in the determination of material needed, availability, scheduling, storage, and handling.
Construction:
- Plan and implement work and goals for each week and for each day in advance.
- Know and implement the necessary means and methods to complete the desired production in a safe and efficient manner, while maintaining quality control and profitability of the project.
- Instruct and train others as to proper construction and safety procedures.
- Maintain and communicate a positive attitude.
- Perform duties and responsibilities of managing field personnel (including but not limited to hiring, disciplining, terminating and training).
- Assist in managing subcontractors on the job site.
- Maintain an orderly and clean job site.
- Utilize company alarm and anti-theft systems to protect company property from theft and vandalism.
- Timely and accurately maintain and complete timecards.
- Timely and accurately maintain and keep current all construction documents (change orders, add schedules, purchase orders, RFI’s, submittals, daily dairies and record keeping, etc.), making sure to timely document things in writing in order to ensure an accurate written record of the project’s progress; to ensure compliance with all contract and subcontract requirements; and, to ensure protection of the interests of the company.
- Enlist the assistance of office personnel as necessary to ensure that communication and documentation is completed as required.
- Keep supervisors continuously informed of project issues, incidents, production information and all other information and suggestions necessary to complete the project safely, efficiently, on time, and on budget.
- Take job site photographs.
- Maintain relationship with owners, engineers, architects, subcontractors, vendors, government officials, neighboring property owners, neighboring property users and COP personnel to facilitate project activities, positive relationships, and communication; to be responsive to their needs; and to promote teamwork.
Post Construction:
- Perform project walk through with owner, architect, engineer and project manager.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, and/or 10 years of construction operations or construction-related experience, based upon assigned area of operations. Must have direct experience and knowledge of civil construction.
- Proficiency in the use of computer with Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, etc.) and ability to learn new software applications.
- Must be able to read and understand construction contracts, subcontracts and other construction documents, plans and specifications.
- Ability and experience to profitably manage all aspects of an assigned project.
- Ability to initiate and maintain business relationships, including working effectively with owners, engineers, co-workers, subcontractors and suppliers.
- Must be able to travel to areas of remote construction project location when required.
- Must be able to work the hours required to profitably complete the project.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and motor vehicle history record that meet company insurance requirements.
Physical Requirements
- Meet all conditions of COP’s drug and alcohol testing requirements as a condition of employment, including pass a pre-employment drug screen and alcohol test.
- While this position is partially office-based, usually in an on-site office environment, it requires a substantial amount of time spent on construction sites exposing the employee to outside weather conditions.
- As part of the construction industry an employee may encounter a variety of conditions, environments and temperatures depending upon the particular task being performed, including but not limited to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; extreme cold, extreme heat; risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate in the office and moderate to high in the field.
