About the Position:
A Pipe Layer is responsible for assembling, connecting, and installing pipe systems for “wet” utilities (storm or sanitary sewers, drains, and water mains). Pipe Layers also ensure that the ground is prepped, on grade, and meets specifications for slope and alignment. Installation of the pipe includes positioning, joining, and aligning the pipes at proper depths, angles, and grades. The Pipe Layer is essential in communicating with other team members regarding the excavating activities associated with installing the pipe, to ensure work is performed safely and efficiently.

Responsibilities
- Work safely and wear all required personal protective equipment at all times.
- Arrive to work on time.
- Prepare construction sites by clearing obstacles and hazards.
- Confirm utilities and other buried lines or structures are located prior to digging.
- Identify, use, and operate various equipment, hand, and power tools applicable to the task.
- Proficient in the safe and efficient use of layout tools, and measurement tools.
- Measure and mark pipes for cutting.
- Ability to load or unload construction materials, pipe, and equipment.
- Dig, spread, and level dirt and gravel, using pick, rake, shovel, etc.
- Dig up existing pipes and lines.
- Prepare ground trenches for pipes and utility lines.
- Use chains, slings, or guide wires to rig pipes, trench boxes, and slide rail shoring systems.
- Guide pipes and shoring devices into place, assisting the equipment operator.
- Join, wrap, seal, and bed sections of underground pipe.
- Remove, fill, or compact earth.
- Assist with establishing alignment and grade with the use of grade stakes and lasers.
- Coordinate all other activities in the excavation as directed.
- Signal equipment operators to facilitate alignment, movement, and adjustment of machinery to conform to grade specifications.
- Work safely around heavy equipment, and people at all times.
- Produce high quality work, safely and productively at all times.
- Assist all workers.
- Perform daily job site housekeeping and cleanup.
- Comply with all safety policies, procedures, and standards of safety, including identifying potential hazards.
- Troubleshoot and solve problems.
- Move from job to job as projects progress.
- Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned by supervisors.

Qualifications
- Minimum of 3 years experience in heavy, municipal-utilities, and/or industrial environments.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Display a willing attitude to learn from others.
- Basic math skills, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
- Ability to read and understand grade stakes.
- Possess a strong sense of personal responsibility.
- Focus to work safely in close proximity to heavy equipment and underground utilities.
- Ability to read and understand drawings, specifications, safety, and quality standards, and effectively utilizing all tools and equipment relevant to work.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast paced, team environment.
Physical Requirements
- Meet all conditions of COP’s drug and alcohol testing requirements as a condition of employment, including pass a pre-employment drug screen and alcohol test.
- Able and willing to work extended hours and possible nights and weekends, as required.
- Able to climb ladders and scaffolds and work at heights.
- Able to work in confined spaces.
- Able to walk, lift, reach, stoop, stand, grasp, balance, climb, kneel, crouch, and lift up to 50 pounds frequently.
- Able to work in outside environments being subjected to weather changes, noise, vibrations, and job hazards.
- Ability to do physical labor and other strenuous physical tasks.
- Able to perform work wearing personal protective equipment. Including, but not limited to, the following: hard hat, ear plugs, safety glasses, task applicable gloves, rain gear, chemical protective clothing, supplied air and air purifying respirators, safety harness, sand blast hoods, and fire resistant coveralls.
