Project Description
Project Description
The First Avenue North project ran through downtown Billings, Montana June and July 2020. The owner of the project was the City of Billings. The project was estimated by Dave Loyning; Joe Hickey was the Project Manager; and Jon Berens, Jerrod Winderl, and Cordell Stookey were the Superintendents overseeing the three crews on the project. Two mainline crews, one on the west portion of the job and one on the east. The third crew worked night shifts to complete the tie-ins. This allowed the project to finish ahead of schedule. COP installed roughly 6,700 linear feet of 12-inch watermain over 15 blocks on First Avenue North, a main street through Billings. Tie-ins to cross streets at each intersection were required, as well as the removal and replacement of 17 fire hydrants. Subcontractors on the project were Northwest Pipe and Studer Construction.

Unique Problem Solved
Vehicle and pedestrian traffic were big aspects of the project since it went through the heart of downtown Billings. COP coordinated with local businesses before the start of the project to allow us to schedule night work to minimize business disruptions and temporary water. The coordination effort of the Superintendents made this a successful job. Between the traffic control, water shutdowns, nightwork, and maintaining access to businesses, there were many possible conflicts adverted. Being downtown, the visibility of the project was also very high. Our crews ensured that the site was cleaned up and safe for the public after every shift which ensured a safe and successful project.
